Stars Are Heading to Shanghai

Stars Are Heading to Shanghai
September 5, 2024

Every player in the world's top 50 is expected to hit the courts at the stunning QiZhong Tennis Centre, 30 September to 13 October for one of the richest ATP Masters 1000 in the world, the award-winning Rolex Shanghai Masters.

Debuting last year in its new format as a 12-day main draw tournament, the Rolex Shanghai Masters, which carries a total prize money of $US8.8million, was a massive success and the same is expected this year when the best of the best men tennis players meet in Shanghai.

The world No.1 Jannik Sinner leads the field and there is a tremendous buzz around Shanghai, China's financial, social and sporting capital, about the stars who will be joining the Australian Open champion. Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion, Carlos Alcaraz, will be making his return and after five years away from his huge brigade of fans in China, the Olympic Gold Medallist and four-time winner of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, Novak Djokovic, will be making his return.

"Novak sent a message to all his fans in China telling them of his return and the already over worked ticket hotline was boiling over; the response to his return has been phenomenal," Tournament Director Michael Luevano said.

"We are so incredibly excited and thrilled to soon be welcoming the players back - Jannik, Carlos, Daniil Medvedev our champion in 2019, also our reigning champion Hubert Hurkacz. Last year Hubi and Andrey Rublev played one of the most extraordinary and gripping finals Asia has ever seen.

"Tennis is such a huge sport in China and with so many national players excelling on the ATP Tour, it has only added to the attention tennis receives. And certainly, having the likes of Zhang Zhizhen and Shang Juncheng who is still a teenager, is superb. They have great personalities, and their tennis has thrilled local sports fans."

Americans Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul are coming off a highly successful US Open. Casper Ruud built up quite a following, Ben Shelton who celebrated his 21st birthday in Shanghai last year is returning as are Stefanos Tsitsipas and Sebi Korda. Australian Alex De Minaur and Grigor Dimitrov are also on the entry list along with one of tennis' break out stars, British No.1 and US Open semi-finalist Jack Draper

There are 27 different nations represented in the original entry list which has an entry cut off at 75. The USA have the most players with eight, followed by France with seven, Italy with six and Spain and Argentina have five each. China has two players in the original direct entry list.
