Third Time Lucky - Granollers and Zeballos are Champions

Third Time Lucky - Granollers and Zeballos are Champions
October 15, 2023

The third time was a charm for Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

After contesting two finals together in 2023, the pair lifted their first trophy this year with victory over Rohan Bopanna and Matt Ebden in the final on Sunday.

It was their eighth title in total, with the No.7 seeds last claiming a title together in Halle last year.

Granollers and Zeballos required one hour and 22 minutes to complete the 5-7 6-2 [10-7] final win.

It concluded a near perfect week for the Spanish and Argentine combination who, leading into the final, had won all four of their Shanghai matches in straight sets.

The experienced duo didn't panic when Bopanna and Ebden ended that streak in the first set of the championship match.

Instead, with an immediate break of serve against their Indian-Australian opponents, the pair quickly grew in confidence.

They soon extended their second-set lead to 4-0 and were the more dominant pair in the match tiebreak, with victory secured on their third match point.

"We were playing against a great team," Zeballos said. "They were serving very well, doing great stuff but I think the most important thing was to stay confident and keep talking. At the end we were playing really good tennis."

Granollers agreed. "We have been working really hard this year to finally get that trophy," said the 37-year-old. "We played great all week and have been for the past months. Everything came together."

Also the runners-up at Wimbledon and in Geneva this year, Granollers are Zeballos sit at fourth place as a team in ATP live doubles rankings. It places them in firm contention to qualify for the eight-team ATP Finals.

Bopanna and Ebden had already achieved that milestone by virtue of reaching the finals.

There were also other milestones of note as Granollers claimed a 25th doubles title, and Granollers a 20th.

They also added to their record at ATP Masters 1000 level with a fifth title; Granollers and Zeballos were earlier crowned champions at Montreal (in 2019), Rome (2020), Madrid (2021) and Cincinnati (2021).

Granollers became the first Spaniard to win a doubles title in Shanghai and Zeballos achieved the same feat for Argentina.
